BILLIG is a partnership between the Digital Humanities Laboratory (NOVA FCSH) and ILOS (University of Oslo), which is funded by EEA GRANTS. This project aims to develop a knowledge exchange between two different methodologies: Spatial Analysis and Computational Linguistics. While NOVA will be employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and online shared SQL database systems, ILOS will be working with Computational Linguistics (CL), namely broad-based syntactic and semantic annotation.
BILLIG’s goal is finding a way to combine these two approaches and make use of existing good practices in both institutions, and thereby promoting access and analysis of large collections of Portuguese literary texts.
We will apply this connection first to the corpus Atlas of literary landscapes of Mainland Portugal, developed by NOVA, and then expand the Literateca project, developed by ILOS, with the application of GIS.
